I Fall Down Stairs
Martha Marcy May Marlene and the Workaholics are having a party in my head.

I saw “Martha Marcy May Marlene” about a week ago. I needed all of this time to realize I liked the movie. I left the theater upon its conclusion wondering if I should go demand my money back.

I’ve heard and said myself a hundred times: isn’t there anything unique in movies anymore? Well, this is unique and I would argue, it is good. Thing is, it really does have to be consumed in a way that one isn’t really ready for. And that may have been the point of the film. If it had one. There are many other web entries out there that will give you the rundown on the symbolism, the point, and the amazing acting and cinematography, so I won’t even try it here.

Part of my initial resistance to enjoying it was the fact that it was billed as a psychological thriller. And it is. But not as much when you are experiencing it as when you can’t help but keep angrily thinking about it for days after you see it. And as often as that line has been used for other films, this one is different. Different in the way that it can’t be explained, it just has to be felt.

This movie feels like a scrap. You want more beginning, you definitely want more end, and the bit you did get was so fascinating that you are angry that you can’t have any more without relying on yourself to build it. And the most annoying part? This movie does not care that you are not satisfied. It isn’t trying to do anything but go through its day. It doesn’t mind that several people will miss the point, because it’s really not trying to preach a god damned thing. Infuriating. But at the same time it has much to say and it accidentally knows it.

And this is all before I apply the fact that it deals with some of my all time favorite topics. Cults, religion, sociological studies, insanity, paranoia, and garden variety weirdness.

Good stuff.

I’ve also started watching “Workaholics” on Comedy Central. This thing is just insane stoner potty humor with garden hose in your face pop culture references that amuses me to no end. It took me about 30 seconds to realize I liked it.

Good stuff.
